To eliminate an unwanted plant by thermal weeding means that the plant leaves are heated for about one second to up to 70° C (155° F). At this temperature the protein in the plant cells coagulates and the plant dies. This applies for small, young plants with a weak root system. Plants with an established root system have to be heat-treated several times. Therefore the best time for thermal weed control is when weeds have just emerged - e.g. before planting or after sowing.
