Klasmann Organic Compost

klasmann organic compost, really good compost, best compost you can buy.To be sure of good strong healthy plants, consistent high quality substrates are paramount. Manufacturing of such products for the many different sectors of horticulture requires not only a vast amount of experience, but also continuous research, on site laboratories and an efficient production plant. There are only few companies in Europe which fulfil these criteria, and Klasmann-Deilmann is one of them.

Klasmann Deilmann, based in Germany, has been manufacturing substrates for more than 100 years. They were also one of the first companies to make certified organic compost.   Klasmann-Deilmann is one of the largest substrate producers worldwide. Their organic compost range is certified by the German organic certification body Gruenstempel (DE021) and approved for use by organic producers in Ireland.

TerrAktiv and TerrAktiv FT

Since the early 1990s, Klasmann has been operating its own composting facilities at which residual green waste is recycled and processed into compost suitable for substrates. During the rotting process, this green waste is enriched by biodynamic preparations which ensure that micro-organism activity is stimulated. Specially added predative mites support the biological suppression of Sciarid fly. The entire production process for composting and organic substrates is monitored by the EU ecological certification organisation ‘Grünstempel’ on the basis of EU regulation VO (EG) no. 889/2008 and 834/2007.

TerrAktiv     (green compost) is biologically active, suppresses root diseases, increases shelf life of potted herbs, is a slow releasing source of nutrients (especially P, K, Mg and trace elements), has a high buffering effect on nutrients, enhances re-wettability.

TerrAktiv FT    a combination of TerrAktiv green compost and highquality wood ?bres (Klasmann GreenFibre), which are fermented in a special process. The fermentation process stabilises the organic ?bres and establishes high microbial activity. TerrAktiv FT is lighter and lower in salt than pure green compost. TerrAktiv FT increases the air capacity in blocking substrates.

Green fibre

kaming wood fibre for compost Wood fibre

GreenFibre is a high-quality, thermally and physically processed wood fibre.  In combination with high-grade raw peat materials, GreenFibre is an ideal component of structurally stable growing media. This special wood fibre is produced in Klasmann’s own plants in Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands. GreenFibre is certified to RHP and PEFC, and for use in organic substrates meets the requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007 and Implementing Regulation (EC) No. 889/2008.

GreenFibre promotes rapid, healthy root development, increases the air capacity and ensures long-term structural stability of the substrate. It also optimises drainage, improves re-wetting, and reduces the risk of algae during the cultivation period as the surface of the substrate dries off quicker.

White and Black Peat

Klasmann only obtains peat from peat bogs that were drained decades ago, when this process was still the politically and socially accepted practice.

Peat is an organic, sedentary deposit that consists predominantly of dead, humified plant material. This plant material has not yet decomposed completely due to a lack of oxygen caused by water repletion and therefore the structure is at least partly still recognizable.

White peat consists mainly of a mixture of moderately decomposed remains of different species of peat mosses.

Black peat consists of highly decomposed residues of different species of mosses and herbs.  The fibres in black peat are longer leading to higher water retention properties.

Coir Pith

KlasmannDeilmannBesteResultate_545 Strong roots thanks to Coir Pith

The main ingredient organic Coir Pith is a relatively new product. It is the layer of corky material between the fibre and the shells of coconuts. It has been recognised as a very suitable growing medium with excellent air porosity and as good a water retention capacity as peat.

Coco coir reduces the occurrence of diseases, lowers maintenance requirements, increases water retention and oxygenates roots.

A note from The Organic Standard

The Organic Standards specifies: -

“For a potting substrate to be labelled as organic, and therefore be suitable for use in the production of potted herbs or ornamental plants to be sold as organic, it must be composed of a minimum 51% (by fresh weight of the end product) of materials from organic farming origin. The balance of the substrate must be made up of non-organic materials listed in the standards.”

(Organic Food and Farming Standards in Ireland, 3.02.05)

This stipulation applies the growing of organic Wheatgrass and Micro-greens, etc.  Peat is not considered to be from such source. Soil from your own holding would fulfil this criteria – but this is not always practical  - and would contain a large amount of weed seeds.

Acceptable and suitable commercial products are the Peat Free Seed Compost from Klasmann which contains 80% certified organic coir pith and Peat Free Potting which contains  55% organic coir pith.

Organic substrates differ from conventional substrates in two important criteria:seed tray

  1.  No synthetic mineral fertilisers and additives are allowed in organic substrates. Possible sources of raw materials are plant and animal residual material, or naturally-occurring mineral materials, such as raw phosphate or potash-magnesia salt.
  2. The amount of peat in the composition of organic substrates has often been reduced. Generally, this means a 20 - 30 % volume peat replacement for seedling substrates, and 50 % volume peat replacement for potting substrates.

Both criteria result in the organic substrate having a considerably higher biological activity due to the available raw materials. This effect is desirable for plant nutrition and vitality.

Storage

Organic Compost has a shorter shelf life than conventional compost as it degrades.  Please store in cool, dark place and once opened close the bag to prevent infestation from the sciarid fly.  Will keep for up to three months.
