Swiss Chard
Swiss chard is valued as much for its dark green leaves as for its chunky silver-white stems. It is easy to grow and overwinters well with some protection from the weather. This variety is particularly tall and robust – as well as having good bolt resistance. Each packet contains approximately 140 organic seeds. More details below.
Organic Swiss Chard Seeds
Sowing schedule: Sow in modules from March for some early plants indoors; or sow from April to July for growing on outdoors. Sow from July to August for overwintering under cover.
Sowing depth: 1cm
Planting distance: 30 x 40cm
Growing conditions: Swiss chard can tolerate poor soils but will thrive in fertile soil that is moist and free draining.
Ongoing care: Chard will grow in most conditions as long as the soil is well-draining. Chard can grow in partial shade but prefers a sunny spot; it can grow in poor soil but will thrive in rich, fertile soil. For best results, add well-rotted compost, manure or an all-purpose balanced fertiliser such as Topmix Complete Organic Plant Food 4-3-7 or Biodigester Organic Plant Food 4-3-7.
Harvest: Pick only some of the outer leaves from each plant and plants will continue to grow and produce more.
Number of seeds: Each packet contains approximately 140 organic seeds, enough for 100 plants.
