Chinese Mustard 'Red Giant' Seeds

Growing schedule: Sow under cover from February to March or sow outside from April to August. Later sowing indoors in September and October can overwinter successfully and be harvested from late October through to spring. Try sowing mustard seed indoors over winter for an early crop the following spring. Sow successively for a continuous supply.

Sowing depth: 1cm

Planting distance: For fully grown plants, space 10-15 cm between plants and 15-25 cm between rows. For baby leaf production or cut-and-come again lead production, use smaller spacings.

Growing conditions: Mustard greens are primarily a cool season vegetable; they are resistant to bolting in cool weather but will readily go to seed and turn unpleasantly bitter when temperatures are too high. Keep well watered in the hotter months. Mustard ‘Red Giant’ prefers full sun or partial shade and fertile, moist, well-draining soil.

Crop rotation: Mizuna is a brassica and should be grouped in planting rotation plans with other members of the brassicaceae family such as cabbage, kale, broccoli, kohlrabi, rocket, turnip and radish.

Harvest: The flavour of the leaves intensifies as the plant matures so pick when young for a milder taste.

Number of seeds: Each packet contains approximately 700 seeds, enough for 5m².
