Organic Egyptian Clover Seed (Trifolium alexandrinum)
Egyptian Clover, or Berseem Clover, is a quick growing summer crop that produces a lot of growth when plenty of moisture and warmth is present. As such, it is productive in a typical Irish summer and is often used with an annual ryegrass for silage and hay production. This fast growing combination also makes an excellent catch crop. It has a high growing point so is not suitable for grazing unless you want to get rid of it.
Special Features:
- Rapid growth in and upright habit.
- Sensitive to frost and cold - dies off at first frost.
- Good ingredient in a catch crop mixture.
- Succulent growth so will break down quickly before following crop.
- Attracts bees if allowed to flower.
- Doesn’t cause bloat in sheep.
- Prefers heavier soils which are not too dry and will not like an excessively low pH.
Management:
- As with other clovers, seed is small so should be broadcast or shallow drilled - the ground should be rolled afterwards to get good soil contact with seed.
- High growing point makes it unsuitable for grazing, unless grazing to terminate.
- Cold sensitive so will be killed off in winter.
