Perennial ryegrass is the major forage grass used in Ireland. This is because of its high yield (with sufficient fertility) and its palatability to livestock. It has been a main focus of grass breeding for many decade so many varieties exist.

Special Features:

• Very high sugar content which makes it easy to digest.
• Best suited for grazing and silage.
• Mixes well with legumes and other late maturing grasses to provide consistent forage production for several years.
• Very low susceptibility to crown rust.

Management:

• Requires good fertility and moisture to perform well.
• Vigorous grass which is suitable for overseeding.
• Management will depend largely on the type of sward it is included with - perennial ryegrass makes quality grazing as well as silage.
