Elephant Garlic For Planting
Though not as strong flavoured as true garlic, elephant garlic is a worthy ingredient in its own right. They can be eaten raw, sautéed or roasted.
Elephant garlic is easy to grow
- Sow from September to November
- Plant 10cm deep pointy end up into well prepared soil
- Spaced 20-30cm apart within the row and 30cm between rows
- Harvest when the leaves start to turn yellow around July
- Dry or ‘cure’ the bulbs in a dry dark and ventilated area for a few weeks – this will allow them to store into winter
