Growing schedule: Sow in modules from February to April and plant out in late spring. Sowing several seeds per module (e.g. sowing six and thinning to three or four) can save on space and onions can then be planted out and grown on in groups.

Sowing depth: 1-2cm

Planting distance: Leave 25-30 cm between rows; thin to 5-10 cm between plants. When planting in groups, allow slightly larger planting distances between each grouping of onions. In general, greater planting distances will allow onions to grow larger while onions planted closer together will be smaller but they will produce greater overall yields per m².

Germination: Onions can germinate from around 4°C but the optimum germination temperature is around 20°C. Use a propagator or a warm windowsill to germinate seeds. Once germinated, they can benefit from consistent gentle heat but can also grow on in an unheated polytunnel or glasshouse.

Growing conditions: Onions like full sun and fertile, well-draining soil. If soil is very acidic, add lime.

Ongoing care: Keep beds well weeded as onions will struggle under a heavy weed load.

Harvest & storage: Once the stems have yellowed and bent over, onions are ready to harvest - usually around August or September. Gently lift from the soil with a garden fork. Then allow them to dry out on the beds or on racks in the sun – or in a well ventilated space under cover if the weather is very wet. Once the skins have dried out and become papery, onions are ready to be stored in a light, dry, well-ventilated place.

Number of seeds: Each packet contains approximately 200 seeds
