Acidanthera/Abyssinian Gladioli are an elegant flower with purple-blotched white petals atop upright stems of dark green. These flowers have an incredible scent and are very nectar-rich. They flower from late summer to late autumn and provide plentiful food for all pollinators. Ideal as a cut flower. 25 bulbs per pack. More details below.
Organic Abyssinian Gladioli/Acidanthera
Abyssinian Gladioli have purple-blotched white flowers at the top of upright stems above neat sword-like foliage. Will flower late in the season, summer through to the end of autum. Plant them in groups for a soft ‘cottage garden’ look.
These are very pollen and nectar rich flowers and will provide plentiful food for all polinators in your garden.
Originating from East Africa Abyssinian Gladioli are sun-loving and drought-tolerant plants. Not entirely frost hardy, they’re normally treated as an annual and can be lifted in autumn and stored for winter. Excellent cut flower.

Organic Abyssinian Gladioli planting instructions-
- Plant in spring in a sheltered, sunny spot. If there is still a risk of freezing temperatures, it’s best to pot them up and start them off in a cool greenhouse or in a cold frame and then plant them out later.
- If planting straight into borders, wait until the weather begins to warm up in the spring and there is a low risk of a deep frost. Plant 15/20cms deep in fertile well drained soil.
- Thoroughly water-in after planting and continue to keep well watered during hot or dry spells.
- Abyssinian Gladioli will be in full bloom by around late August or early September. First, the sword-like leaves emerge around early August, soon after followed by an upright stem bearing multiple blooms which open in succession. The delicate-looking star-like flowers have a punchy and distinctive purple blotch, their fragrance is sweet and fresh!
Organic Abyssinian Gladioli Aftercare
Acidanthera are tender perennials, which mean they have the ability to return each year if stored correctly during winter. Lift in autumn and store in a frost free place until the following spring. If your Acidanthera are grown in pots, you can simply cut back the foliage and move the pot to a sheltered, cool but frost-free location and leave them there until the following spring.
