Nigella (Nigella sativa) is a delicate flower with white or pale blue veined petals. Easy to grow and known for attracting bees and other polinators with its nectar and pollen rich flowers. Often used in flower meadow mixes or grown on its own for its edible seed. More details below.

Nigella (Nigella sativa) Seed

This plant has many names including black caraway, Roman coriander or black cumin. Nigella sativa is grown for its pungent seed, which is used as a spice and in herbal medicine.

  • Planting: Bare cultivated soil, after casting, firm in or lightly rake
  • Sow direct in Spring/ early Summer or early Autumn
  • Likes: Full sun (or about 6hrs of sunshine daily) and water regularly
  • Conditions: Will grow in most conditions, for best results grow in rich, well drained ground
  • Seeding Rate: 1g per m²
  • Flowers from: July-August
  • Height: 20-60cm
  • Attracts: Bees, hover flies and other pollinators. The seed heads will also attract birds
