Hollyhock
Alcea rosea (Hollyhocks) is tall (up to 2m) biennials often found at the back of a sunny border in cottage gardens and along walls in sheltered spots. Each stem bears masses of open, bee-friendly flowers all summer long. Colours vary from white through pinks to deeper reds, measuring up to 10cm in diameter. Sow in early spring and some plants will flower the same year or in Autumn for following the next year. Each packet contains seed for 40 plants. More details below.

Organic Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) Seeds
Hollyhocks are the tall biennials found in traditional cottage gardens, beloved of bees.
Characteristics:
- Biennial
- Colour mix: pink, red and white
- Height: up to 200cm
Growing schedule: Seeds sow indoors from mid March to May may flower the same year. Seeds can be sown in July- Sept for flowering the following year. Starting seeds under cover in modules or pots is recommended as direct sowing outdoors can give variable results.
Sowing depth: Sow about 5 mm deep and keep moist.
Germination: Hollyhock seeds germinate between 15 -20°C. Seedlings are very slow to germinate and can take several weeks to appear.
Planting distance: 30cm apart
Growing conditions: Hollyhocks grow best in full sun with moist but well-draining, light soil
Ongoing care: Taller specimens may need staking
Harvest: Hollyhocks can be cut as soon as the flowers have opened. Let some seeds develop after flowering, and you can sow seeds for the following year. They do self-seed also
Number of seeds: Each packet contains approximately 60 seeds, enough for 40 plants.
