Kohlrabi 'Superschmelz'
Kohlrabi is grown for its bulbous stem which can be eaten cooked or raw; it is enjoyed for its crisp, delicate flavour and its crunchy texture. ‘Superschmelz’ is a light green variety which can grow 30-60cm high and has the benefit of remaining tender to a giant size. It grows slowly and is bolt resistant. Each packet contains 0.3g, approx. 80 organic seeds, sufficient for approx. 60 plants. More details below.
Organic Kohlrabi 'Superschmelz' Seeds
Sowing schedule: Sow in modules from mid-May to June and plant outside from June to July for harvesting in autumn to early winter. Alternatively direct sow outdoors in June.
Sowing depth: 1cm
Optimal germination temperature: 18-20 °C
Planting distance: 25 x 25 cm under cover; 30 x 30 cm in open ground. Increase distances where plants will be allowed to grow very large.
Crop rotation: Kohlrabi is a brassica and should be grouped in planting rotation plans with other members of the brassicaceae family such as cabbage, kale, broccoli, mustard leaf, rocket, turnip and radish.
Growing conditions: Kohlrabi prefers full sun with some shelter on moist fertile well-draining soils. If soils are very acidic, add lime.
