What are Microgreens?

Microgreens are the small leaves of recently germinated plants. They are popular as colourful and flavourful garnishes. Microgreens are low in calories, packed with protein, vitamins, enzymes and minerals. They are a rich source of nutrients. The vitamin and mineral content differs based on the variety but overall they are a great source of antioxidants and other beneficial plant compounds.

Getting started

  • Soak Seeds - Follow instructions on seed packet, some need to be soaked and others (i.e. mustard) do not.
  • Using Peat Free Compost: Sprinkle seeds over a tray of compost, press down gently. Cover with a fine layer of compost.
  • Using Coco Coir: Rehydrate coco coir with water then spread onto growing tray. Sprinkle seeds on top and press down gently.
  • Using Hemp Mat: Cut the hemp mats to fit your container or seed tray. Soak your mat in water 2-3 hours prior to planting. Sprinkle seeds over mat.
  • Microgreens should be sown densely to ensure a good crop of leaves.
  • Spray the seeds with water.
  • Cover the tray to retain moisture. Once seeds have germinated place in area with light. You can boost your indoor garden with a grow light in winter.
  • Keep substrate moist (but not soaking). You should see signs of germination after about 2-6 days.
  • Microgreens are best kept at a steady temperature of about 20°C
  • Cut after 1-2 weeks, or when you are happy with your crop.
