How To Grow Microgreens

If you want fresh leaves for salads and sandwiches all year round then look no further than your own kitchen. Microgreens are easy to grow and will provide you with fresh nourishing greens even in the depths of winter.

What are microgreens?

Microgreens are the small leaves of recently germinated plants. They are popular as colourful and flavourful garnishes. Microgreens are low in calories, packed with protein, vitamins, enzymes and minerals. They are a rich source of nutrients. The vitamin and mineral content differs based on the variety but overall they are a great source of antioxidants and other beneficial plant compounds.

What are the best seeds for microgreens?

This depends on the leaf that you want in the end. All viable seed will grow into microgreens - but some are more coulourful or have a  spicy taste.  Black Kale will give you lovely dark leaves while sunflower will give you bulk and a good textured leaf.  The brassicas and mustards will give a hot spicy taste whilst peas will give you both that lovely fresh pea taste and attractive tendrils.  You could also experiment with making your own mix. As with sprouts You should always use seeds from a reputable source, preferably organic. They should be viable seed suitable for sprouting.

What equipment do I need?

For the substrate you can use a good quality organic peat free compost, coco coir or a hemp mat. You will also need trays of some sort – either seed trays or small containers. And for watering a spray bottle or compression sprayer. A grow light can be used for Darker winter days or if growing in an area without adequate light.

Klassmann peat free compost is approved for use in organic microgreen and wheatgrass production.

Getting started

  • Soak Seeds - Follow instructions on seed packet, some need to be soaked and others (i.e. mustard) do not.
  • Using Peat Free Compost: Sprinkle seeds over a tray of compost, press down gently. Cover with a fine layer of compost.
  • Using Coco Coir: Rehydrate coco coir with water then spread onto growing tray. Sprinkle seeds on top and press down gently.
  • Using Hemp Mat: Cut the hemp mats to fit your container or seed tray. Soak your mat in water 2-3 hours prior to planting. Sprinkle seeds over mat.
  • Microgreens should be sown densely to ensure a good crop of leaves.
  • Spray the seeds with water.
  • Cover the tray to retain moisture. Once seeds have germinated place in area with light. You can boost your indoor garden with a grow light in winter.
  • Keep substrate moist (but not soaking). You should see signs of germination after about 2-6 days.
  • Microgreens are best kept at a steady temperature of about 20°C
  • Cut after 1-2 weeks, or when you are happy with your crop.
