False Oat-Grass (Arrhenatherum elatius)

False Oat-Grass is a tall, fast growing perennial grass, commonly known as bulbous oat grass, false oat-grass, tall oat-grass or tall meadow oat. With heights of up to 1.5 m, it belongs to the taller species of grasses.  

  • Used as a fodder and forage plant and pasture grass 
  • Flowers from May to September, but can continue until the first frosts
  • It thrives best in deep soils with a good supply of nutrients
  • Quick to establish from sown seed 
  • Drought resistant due to its deep roots
  • Will not take heavy grazing 
  • Sown with other grasses specifically for hay production
  • Sensitive to low temperatures
  • The plant needs frequent cuttings in late spring or early summer
  • Spikelets: 7 to 10mm
  • Panicles: 10 and 30cm
  • Broad light green leaves: 10 to 40cm long and 1 to 8 mm wide
