Reed Canary Grass (Phalaris arundinacea)
This is a tall, reed like grass with a running rootstock. It forms extensive colonies of upright stout and smooth stems.
- It is one of the best grass species for poorer soils and is very tolerant to flooding
- Reed canary grass is easier to establish than other other energy crops
- It spreads underground by rhizomes approximately 1 cm thick
- It remains productive for up to eight years after establishment
- Drought resistant
- Sow seeds not deeper than 1-2 cm into a well prepared, firm seedbed
- Rolling before and after sowing is highly recommended
