Growing Acoustic Potatoes
To insure the best outcome for your potato crop it is important to consider the particular agronomic qualities of the variety.
Growing schedule: Maincrop variety taking around 140 days to maturity. Sow from mid April until June
Growing conditions:
- Best planted before sprouting - keep in cold storage and plant without chitting
- Plant into warm soil to avoid rhizoctonia (cause of Black Scurf)
- Acoustic are susceptible to scab so avoid soils where scab has been an issue in the past
- Low nitrogen requirements so don't over fertilise
- For more specific variety information about Acoustic potatoes click here
Sowing depth: Shallow setting variety so plant deep (15cm) and earth up well to prevent tuber greening
Planting distance: 30 x 75cm
Harvest:
- Can be susceptible to tuber blight when plants are in senesence - be deligent and remove or burn off foliage if blight is identified
- Allow skins to cure and set before harvest to minismise bruising
A 500g bag of 35-55mm size potatoes contains 6-7 tubers for trying out. A 2kg bag contains approx. 24-28 tubers - enough to plant approx. 5-7m². A 10kg bag covers approx. 25-40m². A 25kg bag covers approx. 70-100m².
