Organic Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) Seeds
Why are they called snapdragons? Pinching the blossom makes the dragon's mouth open, and snap shut.
Characteristics:
- Annual
- Colour mix: yellow, pink, red and white
- Height: 30-60cm
Growing schedule: Sow indoors from January to May for planting outside once all risk of frost has passed. Flowers will bloom from July to October. Starting seeds under cover in modules or pots usually gives best results but in milder areas snapdragon seeds can be sown directly outside once the soil has warmed up and risk of frost has passed.
Sowing depth: Cover with only a thin layer of soil (as snapdragon seeds need light to germinate) and keep moist.
Germination: Snapdragon seeds prefer cooler temperatures to germinate, ideally between 12-18°C. Seedlings are slow to germinate and can take several weeks to appear.
Planting distance: 25 x 30cm
Growing conditions: Snapdragons grow best in full sun or light shade with moderately rich, moist, well-draining soil.
Ongoing care: Once in flower, dead head regularly to encourage more blooms.
Harvest: Snapdragons are ready to cut once 3 to 5 of the flowers on the stem have opened.
Number of seeds: Each packet contains approximately 1000 organic seeds, enough for 750 plants.
