Lemon Balm
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a lemon-scented herb from the mint family. It is a perennial plant that is very easy to grow. Leaves can be used in tea, sauces and salads. Each packet contains approximately 450 organic seeds. More details below.
Organic Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) Seeds
Lemon balm is very prolific and can spread easily through the garden if not contained. To avoid this, try growing it in a container or a large pot sunk into the soil. To prevent it from self-seeding, cut it back before the flowers have a chance to produce seeds.
Characteristics:
- Perennial
- Height: 90cm
Growing schedule: Sow from mid-March to mid-May for planting out after the last risk of frost has passed.
Sowing depth: Cover only very lightly with soil as lemon balm seeds need light to germinate.
Planting distance: 50 x 40 cm
Growing conditions: Lemon balm prefers warm conditions in full sun or partial shade and moist, rich, well-draining soil. Be careful not to over-fertilise as this will cause the plant to grow large but less flavoursome leaves.
Ongoing care: Lemon balm responds well to pruning, growing back thicker than before.
Number of seeds: Each packet contains approximately 450 organic seeds, enough to cover 10m².
