Thyme
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a perennial herb with a strong, pungent flavour and aroma. It is used in cooking to add depth to a variety of dishes. Thyme is slightly spicier than oregano and sweeter than sage. Thyme is also known for its medicinal properties and has been used in traditional remedies for coughs and colds. Each packet contains approx 1700 seeds. More details below.
Organic Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) seeds
Characteristics:
- Perennial
- Height: 30-40cm
Growing schedule: Sow indoors from March in a heated propagator or a lidded seed tray on a warm windowsill. Sow direct outdoors from May, when conditions warm up.
Sowing depth: The seeds are very fine, only cover them very lightly with the compost.
Germination: Seeds usually take around two weeks to germinate - and will be slower if grown at cooler temperatures.
Planting distance: 30 x 40cm
Growing conditions: When the plants are about 10cm and the danger of all frost has passed, they can be moved outside to their final position (harden them off first). Thyme prefers full sun and light, lime-rich soils. It will manage on heavier soils too as long as they are not too wet. Plants can overwinter outdoors but may do better with some protection.
Ongoing care: Prune after flowering. Plants may require replacing after 4 or 5 years as they can get woody.
Harvest: Cut as needed but do not cut too short in the winter. Harvest only very, very lightly (if at all) in the first year.
Number of seeds: Each packet contains approx 1700 seeds
