Cape Gooseberry 'Schönbrunner Gold'
This variety of Cape Gooseberry was bred in Schönbrunn, Vienna to produce large, golden yellow, berries surrounded by a papery husk. The fruits have a sour/sweet taste which are excellent in fruit salads and make interesting garnishes. Indoor growing conditions necessary. More details below.
Organic Cape Gooseberry ‘Schönbrunner Gold’ seeds
Physalis peruviana
Sowing schedule: Sow seeds inside in mid Feb to early April using a propagator, heating mat or lidded seed tray on a sunny windowsill. Plant under cover in late April or May.
Sowing depth: 3-6mm
Germination: The seeds germinate best at a temperature of 20-24°C. A heated propagator is the ideal place to start off Cape Gooseberry early in the year.
Planting distance: 40 - 60cm between plants with 75cm between rows
Growing conditions: Protection needed; grow in similar conditions to tomatoes - best at temperatures of 21-24 C. Cape Gooseberry needs sun and rich, moist, well-draining soil.
Harvest: From mid-July through to mid October
Ongoing care: Plants may need some staking if they grow too large. Cut back dead leaves if needed at the end of fruiting period. This perennial will grow back the following year.
Number of seeds: Each packet contains approximately 42 organic seeds, enough for 30 plants.
