Quinoa 'Temuco'
Quinoa is a small and sacred food of the Inca people and has been cultivated for about 5000 years in the Andes of South America. It is very nutritious being high in protein and essential amino acids. The grain contains bitter saponins (a chemical defence against birds) which need to be washed out before use. Seed supplied by Irish Seed Savers. Each pack contains 300 seeds. More details below
Organic Quinoa 'Temuco' seed
Growing schedule: Direct sown in drills in April.
Sowing depth: 5-10mm - the seeds are very fine so take care not to sow too deeply
Germination: 7-10 days
Planting distance: Thin seedlings to give plants space to develop, allow at least 15cm between plants.
Growing conditions: Sow in well drained soil in a sunny position. Take care not to grow too close together as plants can grow up to 1.5m high
Harvest: Harvest in early September and bring inside to finish drying. Seed can then be threshed out and winnowed.
