Smooth Meadow Grass (Poa pratensis)

One of the most nutritious perennial meadow grasses. It can grow in a variety of soil types and conditions and is drought tolerant and winter hardy. Used in wildflower seed mixtures, meadow mixes and agricultural seed mixtures.  

Special Features:

• Found in meadows and traditional pastures.
• Improves soil structure.
• Improves water retention.
• Spreads by short slender rhizomes.
• Early Spring growth in well drained land.
• Useful as bottom grass in a mixed sward.
• Good frost tolerance.
• Spikelets are broader and stubbier than Rough Meadow Grass.
• Lower stem base and leaf sheaths feel smooth.
• In general, Smooth Meadow Grass tends to be a smaller plant than Rough Meadow Grass.

Management:

• Slow germination approx. 20 days.
• Prefers well drained sandy to loamy soils.
• Flowers in May-July.
• Height: 10-80 cm.
• Can tolerate heavy grazing.
• Long term persistence once established.
