Analogue Tensiometer
Tensiometers are used to gauge soil moisture content by monitoring the tension or 'suction' force that water in the soil exerts through capillary action. This allows an assessment of water availability to plants and helps in deciding when irrigation is needed. More details below.
Analogue Tensiometer
The porous clay probe is saturated with water and the clear tube is filled with water. The tensiometer is then placed in a representative spot in the growing area with the clay probe buried to the same depth as the root zone. The suction power of soil water is measured as an indicator of how much water in the soil is available to plants. Taking into consideration the soil type, the readings can be used to inform watering regimes and avoid unnecessary or excessive watering.
