- It is advisable to use a micro biologically tested compost such as Klasmann Peat Free Seed Compost to ensure there is no pathogens present.
- Rinse and drain the seeds well.
- Sprinkle the seeds over compost and press down gently. You can cover with a fine layer of compost but it is not necessary.
- Cover seeds with another tray to keep in darkness for 2-5 days or until germination occurs.
- Once seeds have germinated, remove cover and place in area with light.
- Keep the compost moist (but not soaking).
- Best kept at a steady temperature of about 20oC
- Cut pea shoots after about two weeks, or when you are happy with your crop!
Harvesting:
When you are happy with your crop then cut your greens close to the bottom and gently rinse off any compost. If you feel they are getting too big they can all be harvested together and stored in a container in the fridge to keep fresh.
Sprouting Instructions:
- Rinse and soak in clean water for 5-6 hours.
- Drain and rinse and put in your sprouting tray or jar.
- Rinse daily.
- Should be ready within five days.
Nutrition & Health Benefits:
- The shoots have a delicious, nutty and distinct sweet pea-like flavour and are high in vitamins A, B, C and E.
- They contain seven times more vitamin C than blueberries.
- Pea shoots are also rich in calcium, chlorophyll, beta carotene and folic acid.
- Not only that but pea shoots will also add iron, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus and potassium to your diet. That's a lot of nutrition to grow in your kitchen!
Note: The peas in microgreens are the most prone to mildew or mould developing. To help reduce this risk you can soak the seeds for 30 mins in a dilution of hydrogen peroxide. You must have food-grade 3% peroxide - mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 6 parts water. For optimal results use water at room temperature. Doing this as a pre-treatment will kill off any possible spores that may be present on the seed. This treatment is also known to make the seeds germinate faster. Rinse the seed several times with water before planting and sow as normal. You can purchase this product from a chemist.
