This variety of mustard (ISCI99) is a cultivar which has been selected for the highest content of glucosinlates (sinigrin) to maximize the crops use as a biofumigant. Biofumigation is the practice of using biologically active plant substances to help control soil borne pests and diseases. Typically the plants containing these substances are grown as cover crops and then incorporated into the soil as finely as possible.
- Indian mustard has a short life cycle so is particularly useful for horticulture rotations.
- Brings an additional benefit to the already useful practice of catch cropping.
- Produces excellent biomass.
- Mustard has been shown to reduce a number of soil borne plant pathogens. These include Verticillium spp., Rhizoctonia spp., Fusarium spp., Pythium spp., Sclerotinia spp., common scab and a range of nematodes.
- A biofumigant mustard inter-crop is used in potato production to reduce potato cyst nematodes and wireworm damage.
- Earlier sowings will create the highest amount of biomass and biochemical content.
