€3.45

Soybean (or Edamame) is a multipurpose crop that can be grown for the tender fresh beans, or allowed to mature for drying and storing. ‘Hokkai Green’ is a medium-early variety from Japan with high-yielding compact and stable plants. It produces large pods with delicate-flavoured beans. Each pack contains 50g of organic seed. More details below.

Organic Soybean Edamame 'Hokkai Green' Seeds

Sowing schedule: Sow indoors from April to May or outdoors as soon as the soil has warmed up and risk of frost has passed. If growing outdoors, germination benefits from using cloches or plastic to warm up the soil.

Sowing depth: 2 - 3cm

Germination: Seeds germinate in 7 to 10 days at 15° - 25°C (20°C is optimal).

Planting distance: 20cm between plants; 30 - 50cm between rows

Growing conditions: Grow in a warm sunny spot and water well during dry spells. Soybean plants are frost-tender and need a long hot summer to crop well, so they are only suited to being grown outdoors in milder regions. 'Hokkai Green' soybeans grow very well in polytunnels and are an excellent legume to add to your polytunnel rotation.

Harvest:  Pick young pods when still green, when the shape of beans inside can be seen. Steam and serve with salt for classic 'Edamame'  or allow pods to fully develop, then shell and dry mature beans for storage.  They are excellent in soups and as a plant-based protein source. Note: beans must be cooked at all stages.

Number of seeds: Each packet contains 50g of organic seed, approximately 160 seeds.
