Purple Tomatillo
This striking tomatillo variety produces purple fruits encased in papery husks. The plants are vigorous and highly productive, with fruits that develop full colour when exposed to sunlight. When fully ripe the flavour is slightly sweeter and less tart than green tomatillos, making it excellent for fresh salsas, roasting, or preserving. 25 organic seeds. More details below.

Organic 'Purple' Tomatillo Seeds
Growing schedule: Sow seeds inside in mid Feb to early April using a propagator, heating mat or lidded seed tray on a sunny windowsill. Plant under cover in late April or May.
Sowing depth: 3-6mm
Germination: Tomatillo are very similar to tomatoes and seeds germinate best at a temperature of 20-24°C. A heated propagator is the ideal place to start off early in the year.
Planting distance: 40 - 60cm between plants with 75cm between rows
Growing conditions: Protection needed to grow tomatillos which do best at temperatures of 21-24 C and need full sun and rich, moist, well-draining soil.
Harvest: From mid-July through to mid October
Ongoing care: Tomatillos grow tall and need to be supported with either canes or string. Once the first fruit has set, feed plants every week or two with a liquid feed high in potassium such as Vinasse Tomato and Plant Food.
