Organic Chive seeds for Microgreens

One of the most visually appealing crops to grow, chives have a slender shape and look like miniature scallions when grown, with a fantastic onion flavour.  

How to sprout Chives 

  • Rinse and soak the seeds in clean water for 10 hours.
  • Drain and rinse the seeds and put them in your sprouting tray or jar.
  • Rinse the seeds twice daily. Drain water completely after each rinse
  • Chive sprouts are slower than other sprouts but should be ready within 10-15 days.
  • Once you see sprouting you can move the sprouting tray into the light – but not direct sunlight.
  • Can also be sown as a microgreen.
  • Store the sprouts in a container in the refrigerator for a few days to maintain freshness.

How to grow your Chives for Microgreens

  • The seeds do not require soaking.
  • Sprinkle the seeds thinly and evenly on top of moistened soil or compost.
  • It is advisable to use a micro biologically tested compost such as Klasmann’s Peat Free Seed Compost to ensure there is no ecoli present.
  • Cover your crop with another tray or a plate to keep light out and moisture in.
  • Germination in the dark can take from 3 to 9 days.
  • Keep soil moist at all times by misting when needed  – be careful not to over water though!
  • When leaves are showing, remove the lid and move your crop to a well lit location.
  • Your Chive Microgreens will be ready in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Using Chives in your Cooking

Chive Microgreens are ideal for using as a garnish, and for sprinkling on top of dishes, adding a lovely green colour. They can make an interesting addition to any sandwich or wrap, adding a lovely fresh onion taste. They can also be blended into sauces, or added to pasta dishes, stews, soups and salads. Also great when combined with other herbs. Chives, once cut, can keep up to 6 days when stored in a sealed container in the fridge.
