Organic Cress Seed for Microgreens

How to Grow Cress Microgreens:

  • Cress is a very fast grower which must not be soaked as it is muciloginous. (Mucilage is a thick, gluey substance produces by all plants, some more than others.  Basically, if you soak cress seeds they will turn the water quite thick and you will not be able to sprinkle them onto your compost).
  • Sprinkle the seeds over a tray of compost and press down gently.
  • Cover with a fine layer of compost.
  • It is advisable to use a micro biologically tested compost such as Klasmann Peat Free Seed Compost to ensure there are no pathogen like Ecoli present.
  • Keep the compost moist (but not soaking).
  • Best kept at a steady temperature of about 20oC
  • You should see signs of germination after a couple of days.
  • Cut after about ten days.

Harvesting and Using Cress

Easy to grow on the windowsill so you will always have something fresh to eat. Fast growing plant used for its seedling leaves. Sow in rows 10 cm apart or broadcast in a seed tray. When you are happy with your crop then cut your Cress greens close to the compost and gently rinse off any compost. Great on egg sandwiches.
