Organic leek seeds for sprouting and microgreens
How to sprout leek seeds
- Rinse and soak the seeds in clean water for 12 hours.
- Drain and rinse the seeds and put them in your sprouting tray or jar.
- Rinse the seeds twice daily.
- Leek sprouts are slower than other sprouts but should be ready within 10-15 days.
- Leeks and onions are unique in that the sprout they produce is actually the plant - as opposed to the root. The sprouts look like micro-scallions.
- Once you see sprouting you can move the sprouting tray into the light – but not direct sunlight.
- Leek seed can also be sown as a microgreen.
How to grow leek microgreens from seed:
- Sprinkle the seeds over a tray of compost and press down gently.
- It is advisable to use a micro biologically tested compost such as Klasmann Peat Free Seed Compost to ensure there is no ecoli present.
- Keep the compost moist – be careful not to over water though!
- The mini leeks that are produced are smaller than the seed so it is a good idea to sow seed more densely than other microgreens.
- Slow growing – but big on taste and visual impact!
