Sweet Vernal Grass (Anthoxanthum odoratum)

This sweetly scented grass is commonly found in meadows, acid grasslands, woodland margins, heaths, moors and sand dunes. Tufted grass with cylindrical, densely packed flower spikes that prefers sandy loam and acidic conditions.

Special Features:

  • Aromatic when crushed or drying.
  • Flowers early so can self seed.
  • Contains coumarin which gives the hay a sweet smell.
  • Non aggressive grass suitable for flower meadows and traditional hay making.
  • Pollinated by wind.
  • Slow to establish.
  • Height:10-100 cm.
  • Germination: 4 to 5 days.
  • Seeds ripen from May to July.
  • Flowering: April-July.

Management:

  • Scatter seed on tilled ground in the spring through fall.
  • It prefers dry or moist soil.
  • Prefers full sun.
  • Seed is expensive so sow in the warm months to insure success.
  • Adaptable to various soils and can spread if allowed go to seed.
  • Mix with Timothy and meadow fescue to create a traditional meadow.
