Klasmann-Deilmann Organic Composts

Klasmann-Deilmann is the market leader for premium substrates in Organic horticulture and has been supplying organic growers for over 30 years. Their ProLine range of substrates have a high proportion of of renewable raw materials, such as quality-assured green waste compost and RHP-approved wood fibres. All peat raw materials are RPP certified and thus come from responsible, resource conserving land management. ProLine substrates are also produced without the use of mineral fertilisers or additives. Instead, they use organic fertilisers and natually occurring rock phosphates or potash magnesia salt. Due to the raw material mix, ProLine substrates have significantly higher biological activity and CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 40%.

What's in Klasmann Composts?

TERRAKTIV®

Since the early 1990s, Klasmann has been operating its own composting facilities at which residual green waste is recycled and processed into compost suitable for substrates. During the rotting process, this green waste is enriched by biodynamic preparations which ensure that micro-organism activity is stimulated. Specially added predative mites support the biological suppression of Sciarid fly.

TerrAktiv (green compost) is biologically active, suppresses root diseases, increases shelf life of potted herbs, is a slow releasing source of nutrients (especially P, K, Mg and trace elements), has a high buffering effect on nutrients, enhances re-wettability.
TerrAktiv FT a combination of TerrAktiv green compost and high quality wood fibres (Klasmann GreenFibre), which are fermented in a special process. The fermentation process stabilises the organic fibres and establishes high microbial activity. TerrAktiv FT is lighter and lower in salt than pure green compost. TerrAktiv FT increases the air capIt is nitrogen-stable, increases air capacity in press pots, optimises germination and plant development, lowers the risk of excessive supply of ammonium to seedlings.

GREENFIBRE®

GreenFibre® is produced through the thermal and mechanical defibration of softwood chips. This process generates temperatures exceeding 100°C, which expels any incompatible substances as gases, ensuring a sanitized and safe product. Its structure and properties are finely adjustable, resulting in consistently high-quality material from renewable sources.

GreenFibre® promotes rapid, healthy root development, increases the air capacity and ensures long-term structural stability of the substrate. It also optimises drainage, improves re-wetting, and reduces the risk of algae during the cultivation period as the surface of the substrate dries off quicker. The wood chips used to produce GreenFibre® are derived solely from responsibly managed forests.

COIR PITH

The main ingredient of the peat free composts is organic Coir Pith, which is a relatively new product. It is the layer of corky material between the fibre and the shells of coconuts. It has been recognised as a very suitable growing medium with excellent air porosity and nearly as good a water retention capacity as peat. Coco coir is a very clean product, it’s free from pathogens and weed seeds.

Klasmann coir products carry the RHP quality label, guaranteeing suitability for commercial horticulture and consistently high quality, while also being SA8000 certified, ensuring socially acceptable workplace practices.

WHITE AND BLACK PEAT

Klasmann's peat based substrates contain a mixture of white and black peat:

White peat consists mainly of a mixture of moderately decomposed remains of different species of peat mosses.
Black peat consists of highly decomposed residues of different species of mosses and herbs. The fibres in black peat are longer leading to higher water retention properties.

Klasmannactively supports the European non-governmental organisation "Responsibly Produced Peat" (RPP) in promoting the responsible extraction of peat and the preservation of natural moors. Through RPP certification, Klasmann ensures that the majority of its extraction areas adhere to strict guidelines aimed at protecting high conservation value moors, utilizing only drained or agriculturally pre-exploited areas for peat harvesting, and facilitating long-term peat availability while expediting the restoration of degraded bog areas.

Founded in 2013, RPP collaborates with various stakeholders, including scientists, environmental associations, and industry players, to establish a credible environmental standard akin to PEFC and FSC®. RPP's transparent certification system, audited by independent ECAS-certified assessors, ensures compliance with responsible peat extraction practices. Following operations, Klasmann undertakes restoration measures such as rewetting, reforestation, or preparing for subsequent agricultural use in accordance with official requirements.

Different Types of Klasmann Compost

Seed Compost

Seed compost has a small particle size for seeding and has the right nutrient balance for germinating seeds and very young plants.

Seed (Peat Based) - 50% White Peat , 30% Black Peat, 20% TerrAktiv. Available as 70ltr bags or pallet of 42 x 70ltr bags.
Seed (Peat Free) - 80% Organic Coir (coconut) pith, 20% TerrAktiv. Approved for wheatgrass and microgreens. Available as 70ltr bags or pallet of 36 x 70ltr bags

Potting Compost

Potting compost has a bigger particle size than seed compost and is richer in nutrients. Perfect for transplanting seedlings and plants into larger pots.

Annual Potting (Peat Based) - Improved formula for potting on veg plugs aubergines, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes etc. High Nitrogen. 50% White Peat, 20% Black Peat, 10% TerrAktiv, 10% TerrAktivFT, 10% Green Fibre.
Perennial Potting (Peat Based) - This compost is ideal for perennials and shrubs. 30% White Peat, 20% Black Peat, 30% TerrAktiv, 20% Green Fibre.
Peat free Potting - For container growing. 55% Organic Coir (coconut) pith, 10% TerrAktiv, 10% TerrAktivFT, 25% Green Fibre. Approved for organic wheatgrass/micro-greens/potted plant production.
