5 quick growing crops

At this time of year, although there's alot of work going into the garden, there isn't much coming out of it yet. These six crops are fast growing and will give you delicious fresh leaves and veggies in as little as 4-8 weeks!

These crops boast rapid growth and require minimal space, making them ideal for beginners and those with small or container gardens.

'Sora' Radish

Radishes are very quick to mature. They are easy to grow and a perfect crop for someone with a small garden. Good veg to introduce kids to garening. Seeds can be sown into containers or straight into the ground. Sow the seeds thinly (about 2.5cm apart) in rows 15cm apart. Best to sow rows in succesion for a continuous supply.

Asian Salad Mix

A great crop to sow in Spring, this mix is quick to mature. Lovely looking mixture of Chinese leaves; Mizuna, Red Giant, Moutarde Rouge Metis and Green in Snow. The varieties have comparable growth rates and complementary flavours to provide interesting and tasty babyleaf salads. Suitable for container growing, successional sowing will keep you going almost all year round! Sow in rows 15cm apart.

'Ruca' Rocket

Quick-growing, cool-weather green, this variety performs best in spring to early summer. The leaves have a rich and peppery flavour that makes any salad special. Sow from February on in rows 15cm apart.

'Butterflay' Spinach

Very robust, fastest spinach variety on offer. Strong, round-oval leaves, fresh green coloured. A very versiatile crop, can be used in salads, sauces, quiches etc. Sow in a greenhouse, cold frame or outside from January onwards. Sow in rows 30cm apart.

Ready to harvest: 6 weeks.

'Purple Top Milan' Turnip

A fast maturing turnip which is suited for all season production, under glass and outside. Purple-topped variety with a white base below soil level, the roots are flat round and white fleshed. Sow from March until mid August in rows distance 20-30 cm apart. Protect early Spring and Summer crops against Cabbage Rootfly with Insect net.

Ready to harvest: 6-7 weeks.

'Ambrosia' Mangetout

'Ambrosia' is a traditional mangetout pea which produces a generous amount of medium sized flat pods early in the season. Sow outside from March on - ready to harvest in June. Peas need supporting with a netting or trellis, grows up to 70 cm. Best to harvest continuously through the season so plants keep producing peas.
