Klasmann Ericaceous Compost

We’re excited to introduce a new addition to our Klasmann compost range – a special coarse potting compost designed for ericaceous crops. This compost is ideal for blueberries and other acid-loving plants, providing the perfect environment for healthy growth.

What Is Ericaceous Compost?

Ericaceous compost is a lime-free, acidic compost specially formulated for plants that thrive in low-pH soils. Many popular garden plants, such as rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, and blueberries, require acidic conditions to absorb essential nutrients properly.

Why Do Some Plants Need Ericaceous Compost?

Certain plants, particularly those native to woodlands, mountainsides, or heathlands, have evolved to grow in acidic or neutral soils. These plants belong to the Ericaceae family, which is where the term "ericaceous" comes from.

If grown in alkaline or lime-rich soil, these plants struggle to absorb key nutrients like iron and manganese, leading to chlorosis—a condition where leaves turn yellow due to iron deficiency. Using ericaceous compost helps prevent nutrient deficiencies, promoting healthy foliage, vibrant flowers, and strong root development.

Common acid-loving plants include:

Ornamental plants – Rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias, and heathers.
Fruit-bearing plants – Blueberries, cranberries, and lingonberries.
Other acid loving plants – Japanese maples, pieris, and gardenias.
