Livos wood care products will colour, enhance and care for all your wood items in a natural and sustainable way.  The base of most LIVOS products is the oil of linseed - one of the oldest cultivated plants.  You could say that linseed is woods best friend!

Linseed Oil

Flowers of Linseed (or Flax).

When used as a wood finish, linseed oil dries slowly and shrinks little upon hardening. Linseed oil does not cover the surface as varnish does, but soaks into and fills up the (visible and microscopic) pores, leaving a shiny but not glossy surface that enhances the grain of the wood. The wood is protected  - without being covered by a layer of synthetic chemicals which is what happens with some conventional varnishes and wood products.  The very small particle size of Linseed oil means that it can penetrate easily into even the tightest timber pores.

Linseed oil press

Livos grows linseed organically in northern Germany, then cold press it at their factory in Wieren using a traditional linseed oil press.

During the pressing of the plants, waste products are produced - the so called "press cake" or "linseed flakes". These press residues are primarily used for animal feed.

Linseed oil contains a high amount of unsaturated fatty acids (due to its level of Omega 3 it is often recommended as food supplement!).  These fatty acids have the property to react favourably with oxygen and to connect the molecules. Combined with other raw materials they create natural surfaces, which last a  long time, remain elastic and allow the treated item to “breath”.  This breathability is important  as it allows water to evaporate away quickly  without trapping moisture. This prevents wood rot, as moisture gets away easily.

Wood that is protected by Livos products can be reused either in another project, in the garden or simply as firewood.  This is not possible if the wood has been covered with synthetic chemical based varnish or gloss paint, it has to be disposed of correctly.
